Caledonia Fred, Nuu-chah-nulth, Port Alberni
Caledonia Fred has always enjoyed solving problems and assisting others. In her work with the Nuu-chah-nulth Economic Development Corporation ( NEDC), she has assisted micro and small businesses within the region offering aboriginal business financing, training, and conferences. The business training department in NEDC was created after Fred and her colleagues received feedback from their clients on the need for business skills development. Along with her co-workers, Fred worked hard in building up the department to serve the community better.
Fred is a firm believer in continuous self improvement.” I have always looked for ways to improve things and offer better services.” She advises her clients to learn from their experiences as they start to grow their businesses. “Take lessons from every experience you go through -planning is important but unexpected things will happen. “
Fred’s mentor was a major influence in her life. “When I didn’t have self-confidence, my mentor helped me see my strengths, what I had to offer and ultimately completely changed my life.‘ Her mentor’s support helped her to gain self-confidence and explore opportunities for personal growth. Because of her positive experiences, she took on leadership roles within her community.
Keen to help other entrepreneurs in her community, Fred will facilitate a Peer Mentoring Group in Nuu-chah-nulth territory this fall. “I love the feeling of helping others. At the same time, business owners in our community have expressed interest in a peer mentoring model.”
