Combine passion for BC-made wines with savvy business sense and you get Discover Wines, Suzanne Mick and Tracy Gray’s perfectly distilled retail creation.

Mick and Gray have been sweeping up awards since they started their business only three years ago. Their most recent acclaim: the 2006 winners of a prestigious RBC Canadian Woman Entrepreneur Award.

Gray and Mick, who won in the Deloitte Start Up category, are two of only eighty women across the country to receive the Canadian Woman Entrepreneur of the Year Award in the 15 years since it was established. In 2006, they are the only BC winners of the national award.

“It was like the Oscars of women business owners!” said Gray and Mick shortly after the awards ceremony. “We met the most amazing entrepreneurs!”

In 2005, Mick and Gray won BC Entrepreneur(s) of the Year and a BC Business Excellence Award. Not bad for a business that opened its doors in July, 2003. And don’t think for a moment they got lucky.

The road to success for these two wine connoisseurs was paved with a detailed business plan. Two years before opening their doors, Gray and Mick starting studying their options. After a lot of research, financial planning and market analysis, they were confident that they were about to embark on a journey to self-employment success. With the help of Women’s Enterprise Centre, that’s exactly what they did.

“Women’s Enterprise Centre were the only ones who would consider us for a loan and they were fabulous to deal with,” commented Gray. “Women’s Enterprise Centre made our dreams come true.”

Gray acknowledges that much of their success comes down to what they do for their customers, “People are so busy right now, so we have to give our customers the convenience they need. It’s not just about the product; it’s about the experience involved in getting that product.”

“Our entire team is committed to honoring our vision of providing customers with a winery-type experience and exceptional service each and every time they visit our store,” adds Mick.

Offering those customers new and unique wine accessories is one of Mick and Gray’s customer service specialties. “We listen to our customers. Someone will come in and say they saw something in New York and we’ll go and look for it and bring it in. We are usually the only place in BC that carries these one-of-a-kind items,” says Mick.

Customers are welcome to ask Discover Wines’ knowledgeable staff about crystal wine glasses and decanters, corks screws and wine toys. Better yet, they can enhance their shopping experience by sampling featured wines of the day at the store’s remarkable tasting counter.
