Women's Enterprise Centre Celebrates Small Business Week
A small event that started in 1979 is now a month long, nation-wide celebration of entrepreneurship!
This year's Small Business Week theme is "A world without boundaries, open to new markets". The Small Business Week theme recognizes the efforts and contributions made by Canadian entrepreneurs to the national economy, and acknowledges the importance of financial and consulting support for innovative and promising ideas.
We are pleased to pass on a message from BC Minister of Small Business and Revenue, Rick Thorpe ...
Business Tips From Women's Enterprise Centre
As strange as it sounds, one of the best things you can do before you start your business, is to come up with an exit strategy.
That strategy is as much a part of your vision as your goals and priorities are. Developing an exit strategy gives you clarity about how long you want to be in business and how the business needs to grow and develop in order for you to leave it with a sense of accomplishment and completion.
Your exit strategy can create tools for you in your business. When you weigh different approaches, courses of action, or expenditures, it's very useful to know where, ultimately, you want your business to end up.
Consider these options:
- Selling
- Allowing family members to take over or consider an employee buy-out
- Acquisition or merger - considering a larger company to acquire your share of the market, products or expertise
- Issuing shares by going public to raise money by selling some of your business without entirely giving up control
- Going out of business can be the easiest solution but is rarely the preferred option and can sometimes happen by default because you did not create an exit strategy

Success Tips for Women Entrepreneurs
Success Tip #6:
Zeroing in on Growth Strategies that Fit Your Business
The trick to growing your business is finding the right strategies for your business circumstances and applying them properly.
- How did you identify a niche for your business, and what is that niche?
- What makes your customers choose your business over the competition?
- What was your strategy for your business when you first began? (meaning how do you want to do business, how will you get sales, how will you get ahead of the competition…)
- What is your current strategy, how has it changed from the beginning?
- How has your business grown and changed over the years?
- What are your plans for the future of your business?
